Remember me: a photo Gallagher-y

Micah Mertes

Time to fess up ... we know we went a little overboard on the whole Gallagher Hall thing. We recognized it in the moment, but by that point we were already in too deep. We were fully committed. We knew the only way out was through.

It's just that the dorm (now demolished) had such a fascinating history. The people who lived there had such a unique relationship to the place. Gallagher forever remains one of the stranger strands of the University's DNA, and we felt it deserved a proper and equally strange send-off.

So here it is, the final bit of Gallagher content, a photo timeline chronicling the birth and death of a dorm not soon forgotten.

* * *

First let's go back to before the beginning. Here's then-Creighton President Carl M. Reinert, SJ, shoveling dirt at the Gallagher groundbreaking in 1960.

And here's the building being built in 1960-'61.

In the decades since Gallagher first opened, Creighton's campus changed continuously. New buildings, nonstop improvements. But Gallagher — like an old, comfy, tattered La-Z-Boy you just couldn't bring yourself to get rid of — stayed put.

Then demolition started. As one final tribute to Gallagher, here are the last photos we have of it.

(Editor's note: An earlier version of this article accompanied the following photos with the lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You." Upon further consideration, the writer and his editor determined that that was too ridiculous. And yet ... just in case any readers might have found it funny, the writer wanted to at least acknowledge the one-time existence of the gag in the parenthetical you have now finished reading.)
