Photo gallery: Creighton's new Jesuit Residence

Jesuit Residence exterior

This spring, a few dozen Jesuits will move into the donor-funded Jérôme Nadal, SJ, Jesuit Residence, which — in addition to being the Jesuits' new home — will serve as a spiritual meeting place for students, alumni, faculty and staff participating in Mass, spiritual counseling, tutoring, mentoring and mission-based programs.

What follows is a brief virtual tour of Creighton's beautiful new building overlooking 24th Street. (See what the new Jesuit Residence will mean to Creighton.)

The Jérôme Nadal, SJ, Jesuit Residence

The 37,779-square-foot building stands along 24th Street at the east edge of the Jesuit Gardens, behind Creighton Hall and St. John’s Church. The facility is named for Jérôme Nadal, SJ, who worked closely with St. Ignatius of Loyola. Nadal served the early Jesuits in much the same way a Chief Operating Officer might and is credited with first using the phrase "contemplative in action," as he described Jesuit life and ministry. He also founded Messina, the first college opened by the Jesuits, in 1548.

Our Lady of Montserrat Chapel

The 961-square-foot cube-shaped chapel offers a place for all to join the Jesuits for Mass and prayer. As the primary worship and contemplation space for Jesuits, it serves as the central element of the residence's main floor plan, along with living, dining and meeting spaces.

The chapel is named for the shrine and monastery not far from Manresa, Spain. St. Ignatius visited the Benedictine monastery of Montserrat in 1522, leading to a period of intense spiritual reflection before later founding the Society of Jesus.

The Matteo Ricci, SJ, Foyer

The main floor's 959-square-foot foyer — adjacent to the Jacques Marquette, SJ, Dining Room, and Frederick Copleston, SJ, Library — will host residents at gatherings before and after dinners and events.

Meeting spaces

The Jesuit Residence contains multiple high-capacity meeting spaces on each floor, including the Eusebio Kino, SJ, and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ, conference rooms. Meanwhile, various halls and open spaces are lined with block quotes and framed art, including black and white historical images of the University provided by the Creighton Archives and Special Collections.

Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, Community Room

The third floor's gorgeous, naturally lit 1,546-square-foot room (which comes with a full kitchen) will surely be one of the University's signature spaces for hosting events, lectures, and receptions. Right next to the room is the theater, a premium spot for Jesuits to watch a Creighton game, keep up with the news or simply enjoy a good movie.
