That we now have a place on our campus that is symbolic of the cave where Ignatius grew in his relationship with God is truly special.

In 2018, Creighton University President Rev. Daniel Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, visited the cave where St. Ignatius of Loyola had his vision of “finding God in all things.”

“In Manresa, Spain, I am blessed to have stood in the place where Ignatius experienced spiritual enlightenment, and thereby authored the classic Spiritual Exercises, the foundation and charism of Jesuit life and spirituality.”

In March, Archbishop George Lucas blessed the St. Peter Faber, SJ Chapel, located in the Mike and Josie Harper Center, and consecrated the altar. Design elements of the chapel include icons of St. Peter Faber, SJ, and the Madonna della Strada, a prayers and petitions wall, and a chapel cave.

“That we now have a place on our campus that is symbolic of this cave, where Ignatius grew in his relationship with God, is truly special,” Hendrickson said.

Father Tom Merkel, SJ, who serves as a Chaplain in the Heider College of Business, says that he is grateful to the donors, who wish to remain anonymous, for their visionary gift.

“They were instrumental in the creation of this beautiful and sacred place, from the choice of its name, to the prayer wall and the cave,” Merkel said. “The donors truly understand the vital connection between Christian faith, Catholic values and business activity.”

Considered a Patron Saint of Business and one of Ignatius’ closest and earliest companions, Faber became adept in guiding others in the Spiritual Exercises. As he traveled throughout Europe on foot, teaching, praying and spreading faith, Faber prayed for protection through the intercession of the Madonna della Strada.

Merkel says that the new Faber Chapel serves as a complement to St. John’s Church, providing another place on campus for personal prayer and reflection.

People are welcome to visit the chapel whenever the Harper Center is open. The chapel may also be reserved for group spiritual events by emailing reservations@creighton.edu.
