A larger-than-life bronze bust of James Earl Jones, created by renowned Creighton sculptor Littleton Alston, MFA, was unveiled June 16 at the Broadway theater bearing the name of the late stage and screen icon.

“The unveiling event at the theater was truly moving,” Alston says. “James Earl Jones’ son, Flynn, offered heartfelt remarks, in addition to thoughts and stories shared by friends and colleagues of the great actor.

“It was a special challenge to capture the presence and likeness of such a beloved cultural icon, and I’m overjoyed that my sculpture bust of him has a home in his namesake theater.”

The sculpture is based on a smaller James Earl Jones Prize bust that Alston created, which was presented to actor Laurence Fishburne at the 12th Annual Voice Arts Awards in January in Beverly Hills, California. Read more about that ceremony.

Both pieces were commissioned by the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS).

Alston’s bust of Jones appears in the lobby of the James Earl Jones Theatre in midtown Manhattan. Jones made his Broadway debut at the theater – then called the Cort – in 1958, with Sunrise at Campobello. The theater was renamed in Jones’ honor in 2022.
