Featured Testimonial About Creighton University
Some of my experiences pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it was during those challenging moments that knowing there were donors who believed in me served as a source of inspiration and encouragement.
Creighton student Liz Sims, a senior from Omaha, shared her story with hundreds of donors, students, and University leaders on April 12 and recounted a moment that changed her life — the day she first learned Creighton offered her a scholarship.
"My heart was racing as my mom handed me a huge envelope. When I opened it and saw my scholarship offer, I couldn't help but cry. I was so surprised and overwhelmed. I understood immediately that I was going to choose Creighton because of the kindness of others," Sims said.
Each year, the University recognizes its generous donors at the Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon, its largest stewardship event, acknowledging their role in supporting students like Sims.
"Creighton scholarship donors help sustain our mission,” says President Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD. “That this luncheon has blossomed into our premier stewardship event underscores the impact donors make on our community and students. Through their generosity, they alleviate financial stress for students and instill hope, inspire dreams, and empower them to reach their fullest potential.”
Donors have established 425 new scholarships since the launch of the Forward Blue campaign, and they remain the No. 1 fundraising priority. Scholarships are one of the top deciding factors for many who choose Creighton, and often, they are a lifeline to an education that would otherwise be out of reach.
During the luncheon, donors saw firsthand the importance of their gifts in the stories shared by scholarship recipients. Sims and her peers showcased how donors help make their Jesuit, Catholic education possible.
Since her freshman year, Sims has immersed herself in the Creighton experience. She has completed internships, engaged in undergraduate research, and took on leadership roles, such as putting on the Creighton Business Symposium.
"Being surrounded by hardworking leaders has encouraged me to be the best version of myself," she says. "Some of my experiences pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it was during those challenging moments that knowing there were donors who believed in me served as a source of inspiration and encouragement."
Whether organizing student-led initiatives, studying late nights in the library, attending weekly Mass at St. John’s, or connecting with professors and her advisor, Dr. Maggie Knight, Sims has appreciated every opportunity.
"For me, gratitude is not just about saying 'thank you' out of habit. It's in those small moments of reflection that uplift my spirit and remind me never to take anything for granted," says Sims. "Dr. Knight's guidance reminds me of how fortunate I am to have received my scholarship and chosen Creighton."
When she graduates in May, Sims will carry with her a wealth of knowledge and the spirit of gratitude that has defined her college experience.
"Thank you for making my Creighton education possible. It has been an incredible journey of growth, learning, and self-discovery, and I am excited about what's ahead."
