The students attending Creighton’s 40th campus lighting celebration probably weren’t expected a pop quiz.
But they got one.
Eric Baldwin, DMin, vice provost for Student Life, addressed the crowd outside St. John's Church and decided to test their Christmas carol knowledge.
Jingle Bells, and The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire), and Silent Night, and Away in a Manger.
Baldwin sang the first line and asked students to sing the next. They performed well — a delighted Baldwin praises their efforts and finished his remarks by offering a word of wisdom.
“Keep a song in your heart and listen for those jingle bells as you finish the semester,” Baldwin said.
It’s the 40th anniversary of Christmas at Creighton lighting ceremony (read more about its history). The event has evolved over the years — but has annually marked the start of the holiday season on campus.
This year, there was hot chocolate, and there were cookies. There were hugs and laughter. And Santa Claus! It concluded with students joining together to count down from 10, and the Christmas light displays were revealed, illuminating St. John’s and the treetops along the Mall.
Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD, reminded the students to consider the ways they can positively impact the lives of others this Christmas season.
“This event symbolizes that for each of us, no matter our faith tradition, God represents the light in our lives — which we are to reflect in our actions and our encounters,” Fr. Hendrickson said.
