Permission to Stare — Living with Neurofibromatosis

Phoenix, AZ

Please join us for Permission to Stare — Living with Neurofibromatosis, an immersive art experience and the first solo exhibition in Arizona for Rachel Mindrup, a celebrated artist and Creighton’s Richard L. Deming, MD, Endowed Chair in Medical Humanities.

Mindrup’s paintings highlight individuals living with neurofibromatosis or NF, a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue, manifesting in ways visible and hidden. Mindrup’s work depicts her subjects how they want to be perceived, not how she perceives them.

Her portraiture offers a unique and person-centered focus on the individual, not the disorder. “This is one aspect,” Mindrup says, “of improving quality of care in medicine.” The nine portraits on view are of Arizonans, some lost to the disease since Mindrup painted them.

The evening will begin with a reception followed by a brief artist talk. Regional Dean Randy Richardson, MD, a pediatric radiologist, will then present insights and advances in imaging of the disorder. Guests will be invited to join Creighton health sciences faculty in small groups to view and explore the artworks as a community. The evening will conclude with a larger group discussion and social.

This will be a tremendous opportunity both to connect with health sciences professionals in your area and to see a brilliant artist whose work epitomizes the purpose and the power of the medical humanities.
