Four kids, endless memories, and a family that bleeds blue—Minnesotans Chuck, MD’00, and Nora Watts have watched their Creighton crew thrive across campus, from nursing to business to the Class of 2028.

Chuck and Nora both earned their undergraduate degrees from the University of St. Thomas, and Chuck later completed his PhD at the University of Minnesota. He graduated from the Creighton University School of Medicine in 2000.

A decade has passed since their first student arrived at Creighton and as parents to Casie (BSN ’20), Alex (BSBA ’22), Meagan (BS ’25), and Ben, they’ve learned that being a Creighton parent isn’t just cheering from the sidelines—it’s guiding, learning, giving back, and helping their kids grow into confident, independent adults.

Now, as co-chairs of the Parent and Family Leadership Council, the Watts share their perspective with other families, helping every Bluejay feel at home.

What excites you most about leading the PFLC?

  • Chuck: “I love learning, and the PFLC gives me a front-row seat to see what’s happening at Creighton and why it matters. I understand where my kids are headed and how the educational model works—that gives me real comfort. When people ask why we chose Creighton, I can explain exactly why. It’s reassuring to know I’ve entrusted not just my kids—but, in a way, my own reputation as an alum—to a group of people who thoughtfully plan for the University’s future.”
  • Nora: “Over time, we became natural ambassadors. Families we’ve referred often come back to say thank you—they love it here. For me, it’s all about people—building relationships, connecting with families, and helping them navigate their Creighton experience. I love reassuring parents when they hit bumps in the road.”

What strengths do you each bring?

  • Chuck on Nora: “She’s the glue—keeping family, friends, and Creighton connected. Her social engagement is far stronger than mine.”
  • Nora on Chuck: “Chuck sees the big picture. At meetings, he absorbs strategy, finances, and long-term planning with ease.”

What motivates your family to give back?

  • Chuck: “College is expensive, and not everyone has the chance to attend. Our scholarships aim to open that door. We hope recipients contribute not just with success, but with kindness, generosity, and civility—making the world better.”
  • Nora: “We don’t always discuss specifics with our kids, but moments like a scholarship recipient crying because Creighton was the only place she could imagine—those moments stay with you.”

What’s it like being Creighton parents?

  • Chuck: “Being a parent teaches you your own inadequacies—you quickly learn you don’t know as much as you think. I tell our kids that if they bring me a problem, I won’t solve it for them. They need to learn to advocate for themselves. Watching them grow and gain independence has been the greatest joy. Creighton provided a safe, accountable environment, and I never worried.”
  • Nora: “We joked that maybe one would go to the University of St. Thomas—but once Casie started at Creighton, the rest followed. No Tommy's, all Blue Jays and they all thrived. One of my favorite things has been seeing them turn to each other for advice—it’s fun to watch them rely on one another like that.”

Do you have any campus family traditions?

  • Chuck: “Basketball—definitely basketball. And seeing our kids graduate excited and ready for the world—that’s the ultimate reward.”
  • Nora: “Campus visits, games, friends, and the BIG EAST Tournament trips—those are our Creighton family traditions.”
