Cheer on the Jays
This year’s basketball events are expected to sell out quickly with the stage set for another exciting season for the Creighton men’s and women’s basketball teams.
The men’s squad debuted last week ranked No. 15 nationally after reaching the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons. Anchored by three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner, the Jays are keeping expectations high as their returners adjust to new roles and their newcomers settle in.
“We want to compete for a BIG EAST title,” coach Greg McDermott said before the season. “If we can come close to accomplishing that, everything else takes care of itself. We want to stay in the upper echelon of the BIG EAST and compete for a championship.”
The Creighton women’s team has lofty goals as well. The Jays made their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance last year, and they return seven of their top 8 scorers from that team.
Seniors Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly, both Preseason All-BIG EAST Team honorees, will lead the way for a team ranked No. 21 nationally at the start of the season. Coach Jim Flanery recently joined the From the Mall podcast and said there are lots of reasons to get excited about this group.
“Just how much they've invested and how mature they are. I think that's a big piece,” Flanery said. “We had a big team dinner (recently) and just to look around the room and see how much experience there is. How much maturity there is. The longer a group stays together, the more committed they become.”
