| | presidential research award | Misty Schwartz, BSN'92, Ph.D., (left) and Ann Laughlin, BSN'76, MS'94, Ph.D., were recipients of the newly established Presidential Faculty Research Fund, intended to support and enhance the research and scholarly work of full-time faculty. The title of their research is “The Association between Dairy Food Intake, Serum Lipid and Vitamin D Levels in Adolescent Females.” Professor Joan Lappe, MS'85, Ph.D., and Margaret Begley, BSN'91, are also on the research team.

| | Nursing reunion event | More than 300 nursing alumni and students attended the School of Nursing's continuing education event, "Leading Change, Advancing Health," held during Creighton's Reunion Weekend. In response to the Institute of Medicine's report on the Future of Nursing, the program featured Creighton alumni, faculty and doctoral students, and addressed how nurses in leadership and practice positions are using evidence, knowledge and information to influence change.

| | Rauenhorsts donate sculpture | Last week, Creighton welcomed nursing alumna Karen Dolen Rauenhorst, BSN'75, back to campus. She and her husband, Mark Rauenhorst, BA'75, donated a sculpture titled "The Spirit of Jesuit Education" to honor retiring president the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., and his commitment to Creighton University. | | Serving the less fortunate | Nursing student Tess Hiller of Tucson, Ariz., (pictured above) administers an injection at Project Homeless Connect. This annual event, held on Creighton's campus, connects individuals in the community who are homeless with social service agencies, employment opportunities and health care services. With more than 1,000 volunteers, including more than 40 Creighton nursing students and staff, Project Homeless 2011 was a huge success.

| | St. Ignatius award winner | As a part of Creighton’s week-long Founders Week Celebration, Sue Selde, academic success coordinator for the School of Nursing, was presented the prestigious St. Ignatius Award at Mass at St. John's on Sunday, Feb. 6. The award recognizes members of Creighton's faculty and staff who live the spirit of St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit religious order. (Selde is pictured above with her husband, Bill, and the Rev. Greg Carlson, S.J.) Following the Mass, nursing students and faculty attended the annual "Call to Nursing" luncheon. Guest speakers included Emily Stonebrook, BSN'09, Robert Laws, BSN'07 and Betsy Buschkemper, BSN'97. Each shared how they were called to nursing.

| | alumni weekend a success | More than 280 Creighton nursing alumni turned out for the free continuing education seminar titled "Intuition-Rules-Facts. How Nurses Make Ethical Decisions." Attendees listened to nurse leaders discuss ethics within their organizations' fields of expertise. All speakers were Creighton alumni, faculty or students. See more photographs of the day.

| | Welcoming a New Year | Creighton School of Nursing juniors are all decked out in their scrubs and raring to embark on a new academic year. See who these students are, and their hometowns here.
The School of Nursing welcomed 399 traditional undergraduate students to the Omaha campus and 18 students to the Hastings, Neb., campus. They joined 116 accelerated nursing students and a large contingent of graduate students. There are currently 62 students pursuing a doctorate in nursing practice and 60 students pursuing a MSN.
