Creighton Announces New President

The Creighton University Board of Directors has elected the Rev. Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., as the University’s 24th president. Fr. Lannon, currently president of Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, will assume his new position at Creighton on July 1, 2011, succeeding the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S. J., who will step down after a highly successful presidency spanning 11 years. (Pictured: Fr. Lannon, left, shows off his new Creighton lapel pin with Fr. Schlegel before the Sept. 10 news conference.)

Enrollment Sets a Record

For the second consecutive year, Creighton University welcomed more than 1,000 freshmen to campus, most of whom moved into the residence halls on Aug. 21. This fall's combined undergraduate, graduate and professional school enrollment marks a major milestone for Creighton – the largest student population in the University’s 132-year history at 7,385.

Commencement Set for Dec. 18

Creighton's winter commencement ceremony is set for Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11:30 a.m. in D.J. Sokol Arena at the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center on campus. Baccalaureate Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 18, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John's Church. The deadline for completing the application to graduate in December is Oct. 14. The Graduation Application and Participation Form for a December degree is available through NEST.

Experience of a Lifetime

New applications for Encuentro Dominicano, an academic, living-learning program in the Dominican Republic, are now available online. Encuentro Dominicano is unlike any typical study abroad experience. Creighton University has maintained its relationship as a Catholic, Jesuit institution in the Dominican Republic for nearly 40 years. Applications are currently being accepted and interviews are being conducted. This semester, students are being accepted on a rolling admissions basis.

Mass of the Holy Spirit: A Call to Dream

Creighton University celebrated its annual Mass of the Holy Spirit on Sept. 8. The celebration is a tradition among Jesuit universities, as a way to call upon the Holy Spirit at the beginning of the academic year for grace, guidance, wisdom and knowledge. "The spirit of God is present here as we begin a new academic year," said Creighton President the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., who presided over the Mass. "It is a creative spirit, an enlightening and empowering spirit who leads you to this time and this place."

Assisting with Career Planning

One of the most valuable things parents can do to help a student with career planning is listen: be open to ideas, try to help your student find information, and be nonjudgmental. Find 10 ways you can help in the "Parents' Guide to Career Development" on the Creighton Career Center website.

Zipcars Wheel onto Campus

There’s something new on Creighton University’s campus … and it’s not a new building or a new academic course, but Zipcar, the 24/7 car-sharing program. Students, ages 18 and older, faculty, staff and the community have a new convenient, cost-effective and green alternative transportation option. Creighton Students Union (CSU), the Creighton student government organization, is co-sponsoring the initiative with the University.

Creighton Honored in National Rankings

Creighton University was recently recognized in national rankings for its academic quality, value and contributions to the public good – including another rating by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 university in the Midwest region. The U.S. News ranking marks the eighth consecutive year that the magazine has given Creighton top honors.

Office Provides Counseling Support

At Creighton's Counseling Services Office, students can find understanding, acceptance, practical help and treatment to help them handle day-to-day challenges and encourage their personal growth and development. Most students come to Counseling Services for assistance with some identifiable concern. Some typical concerns include self-esteem issues, relationships, stress and anxiety, loneliness, depression, eating disorders and alcohol or drug abuse.  The office provides assessment and psychological evaluation for academic success difficulties and mental health issues. Counseling Services is staffed by two licensed psychologists, two provisionally-licensed psychologists, two licensed mental health practitioners, two pre-doctoral psychology interns and practicum student(s) who provide services on an individual and group basis at no additional cost to Creighton students.

Study Abroad Fair

On Thursday, Sept. 30, the Office of International Programs will host its annual Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Skutt Student Center Ballroom. The fair features a variety of programs abroad that meet diverse academic, financial and personal preferences. More than 200 Creighton students study abroad annually. Early planning is key to a successful study abroad experience. Students are encouraged to meet with the study abroad coordinator six to 12 months before they plan to travel. The U.S. Postal Service will also host a "Passport Processing Center" at the Study Abroad Fair, where individuals can apply for new passports.

Creighton Offers New Programs

Creighton has developed several new programs that will offer students unique opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate level. Among the new initiatives are a new master's degree program in Government Organization And Leadership (GOAL); an interdisciplinary Ed.D. Program in Leadership; and a new energy technology program.
