School of Nursing Newsletter - September 2012

September 2012

Dean's Message
Dean Eleanor Howell, PhD, RN
Dear Friends,

The new academic year is under way, and the School of Nursing welcomed 166 new BSN students and 79 new MSN and DNP students to our programs. Our freshman BSN students led the Creighton Pathway procession this year. The Creighton Pathway is the annual celebratory opening of Welcome Week’s “Academic Prep” day, in which freshmen, student leaders and RSP faculty preceptors gather in front of St. John’s Church. Following a blessing of the students, the preceptors and students walk from the steps of St. John’s, down the Mall, to the Sokol Arena for inspirational remarks and lunch.

On Sept. 1, Alegent Health and Creighton finalized a strategic affiliation to create Alegent Creighton Health. School of Nursing faculty members have been meeting regularly with our Alegent nursing colleagues to expand teaching-learning opportunities for our students and collaborative practice activities. Throughout the process of joining the organizations, Creighton University and Alegent have worked closely together to provide a seamless transition for patients and healthcare employees. On Aug. 21, a joint reception was held to celebrate our history of collaboration and shared values. I invite you to view a short video of the event.

Recently, Creighton University was ranked fourth in a national listing of schools contributing to the public good. Washington Monthly ranked Creighton based on criteria related to social mobility, research and service. Nursing students and faculty alike live the mission of service and scholarship. For example, during the summer, nursing students and faculty conducted school physicals for underprivileged children in the local community, and faculty members continue to conduct research addressing childhood obesity.

For the fifth year, the School is hosting a continuing education event offered free to our alumni. We hope to see you there on Sept. 21, and at all the other Alumni Weekend events!
