March 2012

Dean's Message
Students have returned this week from spring break, and we are enjoying the successes of Creighton’s basketball teams. Meanwhile, 102 senior BSN students are immersed in their preceptorships and 40 MSN and DNP students are in their final residency experiences. Both groups are looking forward to May graduation.

Last month, I visited San Salvador, El Salvador, as part of the Ignatian Colleagues Program (ICP). ICP is an 18-month program designed to develop Ignatian partners in Jesuit higher education who are prepared and committed to advance their school’s Jesuit, Catholic mission. The seven-day immersion in El Salvador is one component of ICP and is designed to foster an appreciation of the Jesuit commitment to a faith that does justice.

Our group of 22 representatives from 13 Jesuit universities visited Archbishop Oscar Romero’s home, tomb and the site of his assassination; Central American University and the site of the 1989 assassination of the six Jesuit priests; massacre sites in Cuscatlan; and various neighborhoods, businesses and churches. We visited with community members and business leaders, members of Christian Base communities, educators, students and government and elected officials.

The immersion was an intense emotional learning experience laden with conflicts, contradictions and complex issues. I’ll share more about the ICP and my experiences in subsequent messages.
