Federal student aid for higher education has been a prime target of recent budget cuts. Already $30 billion in aid has been lost. The Student Aid Alliance, a coalition of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and 61 other higher education associations, is sending a petition to Capitol Hill to save Pell Grants and other student aid.

Creighton will host its winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the D.J. Sokol Arena at the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. It is preceded by a baccalaureate Mass at St. John's Church at 9:30 a.m.

Dates for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2012-13 academic year are approaching. Students enrolling in summer courses are encouraged to file in early 2012. Creighton's priority deadline for receiving the FAFSA results is April 1. The Department of Education now requires schools to obtain IRS transcripts in place of copies of federal tax returns. Transcripts are not available until a tax return is filed, so early tax filing is encouraged. Visit Creighton's Financial Aid website for regular updates.
What's cooking at Creighton University? The College of Business is offering a new course titled Innovation and Integration in the Bakery that mixes lessons on social entrepreneurship and food-based business models with a dash of basic baking skills. It's all part of the Educated Baker program established by Creighton graduate Steven Michael Kelly, business development director in Creighton's College of Business.

The popular student version of Daily Reflections has returned to Creighton's Online Ministries website, with students offering brief reflections on the daily scripture readings. Creighton also offers a Praying Advent website, which features seasonal reflections, audio retreats and daily prayers.
Is your student struggling academically or does he or she need help in a particular subject? Creighton's nationally certified tutoring program offers drop-in tutoring in chemistry and math five nights a week, along with small-group tutoring, individual tutoring and personalized academic coaching. The program was recently certified by the College Reading and Learning Association after an extensive review process.
This fall, Creighton began offering a new major in energy technology. The program prepares students to excel in cutting-edge, rapidly advancing fields, through coursework and hands-on learning. Two tracks of study are offered: one for students who wish to pursue a career in sustainability, energy policy or law, and another for students interested in a science, math or engineering career. The 18-2-0 and No. 2-ranked Creighton men’s soccer team captured its 12th Missouri Valley Conference tournament title and will host a second-round match in the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship this Sunday, Nov. 20, at Rev. Nearly 195 students participated in Fall Break Service Trips this year, serving and learning at 19 community partner sites across the country, from Omaha to Milwaukee to El Paso. This fall included five new host sites. Creighton will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its Spring Break Service and Justice Trips in 2012. Learn more about those trips and important dates here.
Students interested in studying abroad during summer 2012, fall 2012 or the 2012-2013 academic year, should submit an online application by Dec. 1. Approximately 10 faculty-led programs will travel in summer 2012 to Bolivia, China, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Peru, Spain and Uganda. Creighton University has been named by the Fulbright Program to its list of colleges and universities that produced the most 2011-2012 U.S. Fulbright scholars. Educating students on smart money management is the goal of campus sessions being held by Creighton's Financial Aid Office. Sessions have included information on budgeting, using credit and debit cards wisely, and tracking weekly expenses. Student groups are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office to schedule a presentation. The office also offers individual counseling sessions on an appointment basis.
Is your student thinking of going Greek? Formal recruitment is just around the corner. This will be the first opportunity for freshman students to learn about Creighton's Greek system. If your student is interested, please encourage him or her to attend the informational sessions on Dec. 4. Women’s formal recruitment will take place Jan. 11-16, and men’s recruitment from Jan. 15-27.

More than 3,000 students received a free flu vaccine this fall as part of Creighton's "Shoo the Flu" campaign. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that all college students receive an annual flu shot. Students still needing the flu vaccine are encouraged to call 402.280.2735 to schedule a time for their free dose.
