School of Nursing Newsletter - June 2011

June 2011

Dean's Message
Dean Eleanor Howell, PhD, RN
Summer semester is in full swing, and our accelerated BSN, RN-BSN and graduate nursing students are hard at work on their courses and in clinical practica.

This month, we bid farewell to Creighton’s president, the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J. We are grateful for his service to the University over the past 11 years, and for his support of the School of Nursing as we developed the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program, expanded our student enrollment and graduate majors, and established the School’s first endowed chair.

As many of you are aware, flooding along the Missouri River is causing many problems and much suffering and loss. Within the School of Nursing, several colleagues have evacuated their homes or are on stand-by to evacuate. Reports from students confirm the loss of family homes and farms. In addition to the emotional trauma of leaving or losing homes, the financial losses associated with the situation are tremendously challenging.

Here at Creighton, we are taking steps to prepare for potential flooding and sewer damage on the Omaha campus. I ask that you please remember the people, animals and property in the region in your prayers.

Whatever your summer plans include, please take time to care for yourself and those you love.

-- Eleanor Howell, PhD, RN
Dean

Rauenhorsts donate sculpture
Last week, Creighton welcomed nursing alumna Karen Dolen Rauenhorst, BSN'75, back to campus. She and her husband, Mark Rauenhorst, BA'75, donated a sculpture titled "The Spirit of Jesuit Education" to honor retiring president the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., and his commitment to Creighton University. Pictured with the artist, fine arts professor Littleton Alston, are, from left, Mrs. Rauenhorst, School of Nursing Alumni Board member and Mrs. Rauenhorst's cousin, Diane Stormberg, and Dean Howell. The nursing school is especially grateful to the Rauenhorsts for the generous donation of the Mark and Karen Rauenhorst Endowed Scholarship, given each year to an accelerated nursing student.
