Spring Commencement Set for May 14 Spring commencement is Saturday, May 14, at the Qwest Center Omaha arena. The ceremony for students in arts and sciences, business, EMS education, law and the Graduate School begins at 9:30 a.m. The ceremony for students in nursing, pharmacy and health professions, dentistry and medicine begins at 1:30 p.m. Graduation brunch will be held Friday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Skutt Student Center, with Baccalaureate Mass to follow at 3 p.m. in the Kiewit Fitness Center. Confidence U Comes to Creighton Creighton University's Panhellenic Council will sponsor "Confidence U," a series of on-campus events, March 28 to April 1, designed to promote self-esteem and confidence among collegiate women. National studies indicate that many issues facing college women are directly related to a lack of confidence. Learn more about this special week.
Students Spend Spring Break Providing Service A total of 218 students traveled to 27 sites around the country performing community service as part of Creighton University's 29th annual Spring Break Service Trips, March 7-11. The theme for this year's trips was "We are all sisters and brothers." The program is sponsored by the Creighton Center for Service and Justice (CCSJ). Service efforts varied from helping children and adults learn English as a second language to working in soup kitchens to living with and serving the homeless. The trips are grounded on seven pillars: service, sustainability, justice, community, simplicity, solidarity and reflection. Learn More
Stay Up to Date with Financial Aid With the financial aid award season under way, Creighton's Financial Aid Office reminds parents and students to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as possible. Getting this information to the Financial Aid Office ensures your family the utmost consideration for all forms of federal and institutional aid. The Financial Aid Office also encourages parents and students to check the NEST website on at least a weekly basis to stay current on financial aid related updates and any needed documents. (Check with your student for access to the NEST.) Students will receive an e-mail notifying them of any financial aid awards. They then must visit the NEST to review and accept any awards.

New Service Lists Off-Campus Housing Creighton University is partnering with an off-campus listing service called Creighton Real Estate with Honors to help students, faculty and staff find housing and related service providers in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The service was launched earlier this month. The website includes a wide variety of property types, locations, price ranges and dwelling sizes. It also will feature housing options from across the Omaha and Council Bluffs metro areas, including apartment communities, houses for sale and rent, downtown condos and short-term furnished housing.
Campus Ministry Offers Opportunities Creighton University Campus Ministry offers many Lenten opportunities for students, including a retreat series. Other upcoming events include "Hand-in-Hand 2011," during which Creighton students welcome Omaha-area adults with developmental disabilities to campus, and an April 8-9 diversity retreat, which offers students the opportunity to spend time reflecting on various cultures and traditions centered on the theme, "Coming to the Table." Creighton Inaugurates New Faculty Chair Eileen Burke-Sullivan, S.T.D., associate professor of theology, director of Creighton's online Master of Arts in Ministry program and associate director of the Master of Christian Spirituality program, became the first to hold the Barbara Reardon Heaney Chair in Pastoral Liturgical Theology in Creighton's College of Arts and Sciences at a ceremony on Feb. 23. The new chair in pastoral liturgical theology reaffirms Creighton's commitment to the importance of public worship in the life of the Church and will allow as many students as possible to study the transformative power of liturgy so that they, in turn, can go out and transform their world and become leaders in their communities of worship. Campus Safety Assessment Under Way Campus safety and security are critical elements to a healthy campus environment. To that end, Creighton conducted a campus-wide safety survey of all students, staff and faculty earlier this month. Additionally, an external safety assessment will be conducted by a team of public safety professionals from three out-of-state metropolitan universities. The assessment team will visit campus for three days to review conditions, examine safety practices and recommend the implementation of additional measures and practices. Fr. Schlegel Delivers Final Convocation Address Creighton University President the Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., delivered his final Convocation address in February, highlighting the state of the University. Fr. Schlegel will be retiring as president at the end of this academic year, after serving in the position for 11 years. "I am very grateful for the opportunities of these past 11 years; opportunities to watch a place that I deeply love grow and prosper; opportunities to see transformational change in the physical footprint of the campus while celebrating our fidelity to our Catholic and Jesuit identity, our academic quality, professional distinction, and generosity of service to the needy of Omaha and beyond," Fr. Freshmen Recognize Influential Professors Creighton University freshmen had an opportunity to recognize the professor who had the most influence on them in their first semester of college with the new IGGY award. The award is affectionately named after St. Ignatius, founder of the Jesuit religious order. "We wanted freshmen to have the opportunity to identify a primary Creighton person who helped them through the initial freshmen adjustments," said Mary Higgins, assistant vice president for student retention. Meet the Dean of Financial Literacy The Financial Aid Office at Creighton University offers an online financial literacy resource to assist students in managing their finances. It includes information on a wide range of financial issues from managing credit cards, to establishing a budget, to knowing one's credit score.
