Congratulations to Creighton SOTL Mentor and Scholars
Kathleen Flecky, occupational therapy, has been recognized as a SoTL mentor for the 2013 IISSAM institute. Flecky was a scholar participant at the National Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Summer Institutes in 2008 and 2009. She was a workshop presenter at the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL/IISSAM) at Creighton in 2011. She is one of six named scholars. Four Creighton Faculty were among the competitively selected 2013 IISSAM scholars: Donna Ehrlich, education (in collaboration with Jeff Ehrlich, Park University, public relations), “The Perceptions of Using Online Story Telling: From Course Material to Student Constructivist”; Kevin Graham, philosophy, “A Blended Approach to Logic Instruction in Philosophy”; Brian Kokensparger, journalism, media and computing, “Using Audio Introductions to Reinforce Student Programming Skills in Introductory Computer Science Courses”; Faith Kurtyka, English, “Active Learning and Student Engagement in a Social Sorority.” Read more about the scholar presentations.
AWARDS AND HONORS

GOLDWATER SCHOLAR
Junior Joseph Christensen has been named a Goldwater scholar. The Audubon, Iowa, native, majoring in chemistry, was selected as a Goldwater Scholar for the 2013-2014 academic year. He is the 13th Goldwater scholar at Creighton in the past 10 years. Read More

Conference top honors
Students Brent Bruck, Shweta Goswami and Zoran Pavlovic were awarded top honors at the West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference on April 20 in San Diego, Calif. Six Creighton students presented at the conference, along with more than 400 other undergraduates from 60 institutions nationwide.

PAPERS PUBLISHED
Papers by senior Paul Bubash and alumna Erin Cahill, BA'12, will be published in the Journal of Theta Alpha Kappa, a religious studies/theology refereed, scholarly journal. Bubash's paper was prepared under the direction of Wendy Wright, Ph.D., and Cahill's under the direction of Eileen Burke-Sullivan, Ph.D.

CREIGHTONIAN HONORED
The Creightonian was named the best all-around non-daily student newspaper in the Society of Professional Journalists' (Region 7) Mark of Excellence competition. Individual awards were presented to Evan Holland (editorial writing), Matt Entringer (general news reporting and photo illustration), Jacob Padilla (sports writing) and Sara Gentzler (online in-depth reporting).

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) Scholar Program recognized accelerated nursing student Eric Harvester as one of its February essay contest winners.

Students Kelsey Patience (pictured) and Nickolas Gabriel were named Nebraska State Student Nurse of the Year and Board Member of the Year, respectively, at the Nebraska Student Nurses Association Convention.

MEDICAL, GRADUATE AWARDS
Creighton medical and graduate students won seven of the 16 awards at the 44th Midwest Student Biomedical Research Forum held Feb. 23 at the Harper Center. Congratulations to Michelle Pequet, Chelsie Geyer, Randal Fowler, Michael Lehrer, Sean Judge, Joseph Chen, and Katie Langenfeld.

Save the date – The Creighton Office of Online Learning (COOL) will be hosting this year’s Summer eAcademy for faculty June 4-6. Watch for more information regarding this new teaching and learning opportunity.

BLUELINE ASSESSMENT TOOL
The Office of Academic Excellence and Assessment is proud to announce a self-paced workshop to complement the campus assessment certification/training efforts. Special thanks to AEA associate Brian Kokensparger for developing this BlueLine2 Assessment Tools Workshop. Information on the self-paced workshop can be found here.

ONLINE TEACHING COURSE
The Creighton Office of Online Learning (COOL) is pleased to announce the availability of the Foundations of Effective Online Teaching and Learning certificate course. The course encompasses foundational knowledge and skills necessary for successful online course facilitation. The next available session is July 22. CAMPUS RESOURCES

ONLINE DEVELOPMENT
Creighton has an institutional membership to Sloan Consortium and WCET. Both are great resources dedicated to improving the quality of distance education. Sloan Consortium announced changes in the 2013 Institute program of events, which will encompass a certificate program, mastery series, workshop series and webinars.


LIBRARY PARTNERSHIP

The Reinert-Alumni Memorial Library partners with both COOL and AEA to offer campus-wide subscriptions. Take advantage of the great resources found in the April issues of the Teaching Professor and the Online Classroom. Contact Sally Gibson, 280-2228, for more information.

FACULTY ARTICLE
Moments of Joy: Preservice Teachers’ Experiences of Professional Efficacy by education professor Lynne E. Houtz, Ph.D., explores professional efficacy related to elementary and middle level teachers as they reflected on events/circumstances that affirm their career choice. The article is to be published in the National Social Science Journal.

NEW TRADITIONAL STUDENT

The 19th Annual Sloan Consortium International Conference on Online Learning is accepting presentation proposals. The proposal deadline is May 20. More information; submit a proposal.

RUBRICS WANTED
Do you have a rubric that works particularly well for assessing student learning of any kind (course assignments, co-curricular, service-learning, etc.)? If so, please consider submitting it to the AEA office for inclusion in a Rubric Gallery and for possible inclusion in BlueLine2. Send rubrics as an e-mail attachment to Brian Kokensparger. (Doc, docx, and pdf formats are preferred; web URLs are also welcome.)
