October 2012
About Us
The Office for Academic Excellence and Assessment (AEA) at Creighton University provides ongoing support and resources to enhance teacher effectiveness and student learning.

To learn more about faculty development programming, assessment, course design, student learning processes and/or effective teaching methods, or the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), contact Mary Ann Danielson at 402.280.2535.

To help us all CONNECT, please forward your suggestions for materials to be included, as well as your awards and honors, to Danielson at maddam@creighton.edu. As a campus, we should be celebrating our teaching and student learning successes!

Assessment Workshop Certificate Series Established
An Assessment Workshop Certificate series, hosted by the University Assessment Committee and the Office for Academic Excellence and Assessment, is designed to assist faculty and professional staff in developing goals and objectives, refining assessment plans, producing evidence of student learning, and/or analyzing and reflecting on the data in ways that improve our students’ learning. An expected outcome of these workshops is the strengthening of our campus assessment collaborations and peer learning. Therefore, all program assessment champions are strongly encouraged to attend — to learn from and to share with your campus colleagues our “best practices” in student assessment.

This year’s Assessment Certificate series will consist of two half-day workshops, during which participants will bring their program goals, assessment plans, curriculum maps, evidence, reports, and/or supporting documents and work with facilitators to advance their assessment work. The topics addressed in the Oct. 29 workshop included: educational goals and objectives, curriculum mapping, and review and selection of appropriate performance measures. The topics addressed in the spring workshop, scheduled for March 25, 2013, will include: collection and analysis of assessment data, analyzing and reporting on assessment results, and using the results to inform the program’s continuous improvement plan.

If you have questions regarding the workshops, participation expectations, and/or requirements, please contact Mary Ann Danielson, maddam@creighton.edu.
IISSAM/SoTL Updates

Save The Date
The 2013 IISSAM Faculty Development Institute will be held May 30-June 2 at Loyola Marymount University. Given its Los Angeles location, the "storytelling" theme promises exciting contributions by local media/film storytellers, as well as an array of SoTL scholars. Look for the Scholars' Call in our December 2012 newsletter.

SoTL Bibliography
Mick Healey, a higher education consultant and active SoTL scholar, has compiled a rich array of bibliographies and resources. This month, we feature his Scholarship of Teaching and Learning; A Selected Bibliography as we encourage you to begin planning your scholars' proposals and SoTL journal submissions.
FACULTY DEVELOPMENT

Online Teaching Course
The Creighton Office of Online Learning (COOL) is pleased to announce the availability of the Foundations of Effective Online Teaching and Learning certificate course. The course encompasses foundational knowledge and skills necessary for successful online course facilitation. This course is designed for anyone currently teaching or planning to teach an online or hybrid course for Creighton University. Faculty new to teaching online at Creighton should complete the course; all other faculty are welcome, as well. Approximately eight to 10 hours are required to complete the course. An overview of the Foundations Course is available by contacting COOL@creighton.edu.

Online Development
Sloan Consortium and WCET are both great resources dedicated to improving the quality of distance education. Creighton has an institutional membership, so take advantage of these resources.

Distance Education
A resource page that includes information on distance-education journals and distance-education scholarship is available on the COOL website.

Library Partnership
The Reinert Alumni Memorial Library partners with both COOL and AEA to offer campus-wide subscriptions. Take advantage of the great resources found in the October issues of the Teaching Professor and the Online Classroom. Contact Sally Gibson, 402.280.2228, for more information.

Solidarity Lecture Series
The Solidarity Lecture Series is an opportunity for Creighton faculty to share research and work in areas of diversity and multiculturalism with the Creighton community throughout the academic year. The Solidarity Lecture Series has two goals: (1) Participants will gain knowledge and discuss issues of diversity and (2) Presenters will share current research in areas of social justice, diversity and multiculturalism. For more information on this program or if you are a CU faculty member interested in participating, please contact Luz Colon-Rodriguez.
