Project Homeless Connect
Thank you to all who participated and assisted with Project Homeless Connect Omaha on Friday, March 23. With the assistance of 582 students (422 from Creighton), 142 community members, 102 faculty/staff members (87 from Creighton), 76 people helping with set-up/clean-up, 33 Omaha/Council Bluffs service agencies, 21 licensed medical professionals, and 18 "Ask Me" volunteers, we were able to serve 480 Omaha/Council Bluffs area homeless guests.
Regardless of your participation in the event, without the support of Creighton University, this event would not be possible.

Program spotlights
Continuing with our annual series highlighting the programs in which our students have participated, this month, we feature two of our immersion-based programs, which were active over the March spring break: Spring Break Service Trips and the Gateway Initiative Program.

Service Trips
Creighton's Center for Service and Justice sponsors both Fall and Spring Break Service Trips; in 2011, over 350 students traveled to over 30 service sites in 19 states, providing direct service opportunities for students to work with poverty, immigration, sustainability and nonviolence. For a report on the 2012 Spring Break Service Trips, read the just-released newsletter.

Gateway Initiative
The Gateway Initiative Program, formerly the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program, provides college awareness and preparation, scholarship mentoring, and student and faculty immersion trips. This initiative has grown into a campus-wide partnership by which the Creighton community provides service in the Omaha area and on several reservations to students who need the help and encouragement in pursuing college educations. In 2010-11, over 200 Creighton volunteers helped 1,180 middle school and high school students benefit from this program. The impact to Creighton is evident by the 30 Gates Scholars enrolled at Creighton during the 2010-2011 academic year and a total of 169 students earning the Gates scholarship since 2001.
