community service honor roll
Thank you to the almost 30 individuals from 22 offices, colleges and schools who assisted in Creighton's submission to the President's Honor Roll for Community Service.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, 4,064 students engaged in 293,820 hours of service. More than 50 percent of those students engaged in at least 20 hours in a given academic term, and 1,741 participated in some form of academic service-learning.

Although Creighton reported fewer students participating in service than in 2009-2010, our total number of service hours is a new record! Thank you to all the students who have found ways to live Creighton's mission of service!

This month, we will begin our annual series highlighting the programs in which our students have participated. This month, we feature the School of Dentistry's Native American Summer Enrichment Program and Creighton's Gateway Program.

Gateway Program
Through the Gateway Program (formerly known as the Gates Initiative), Creighton students, faculty and staff assist Native American high school students in completing the Gates Millennium Scholarships and in general college preparation, among other activities.

Since 2001, 169 of these students have earned Gates Scholarships, and 30 of them enrolled at Creighton during the 2010-2011 academic year. The program was featured in an episode of Creighton in the Community. You can also read more here.

Thanks to Ann Laughlin, Meghan Pothoff, Misty Schwartz, Barbara Synowiecki and Amy Yager, School of Nursing, who were willing to share their article, "Combining Service Learning and Research: Partnering with Schools" as published in the September/October 2010 issue of Nurse Educator.
