December 2011
About Us
The Office for Academic Excellence and Assessment (AEA) at Creighton University provides ongoing support and resources to enhance teacher effectiveness and student learning.

To learn more about faculty development programming, assessment, course design, student learning processes and/or effective teaching methods, or the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), contact Mary Ann Danielson at 402.280.2535.

To help us all CONNECT, please forward your suggestions for materials to be included, as well as your awards and honors, to Danielson at maddam@creighton.edu. As a campus, we should be celebrating our teaching and student learning successes!

Seeking award nominations
Magna Publications and The Teaching Professor are seeking nominations for the Maryellen Weimer Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning Award. In its fourth year, the award recognizes outstanding scholarly contributions with the potential to advance college-level teaching and learning practices. Articles of at least 1,500 words and published in 2010 or later are eligible for submission. Author(s) of the winning article will be recognized at the 2012 Teaching Professor Conference, June 1-3, 2012, in Washington, D.C., with a $1,000 stipend. Find evaluative criteria and submission processes here. Submissions are due by Jan. 15, 2012. Please copy Mary Ann Danielson on your submission, and a complete list of Creighton submissions will be included in a spring 2012 newsletter.

For your scholarly projects that are not yet ready for publication, please consider submitting your best Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) "work-in-progress" to the 2012 International Institute for SoTL Scholars and Mentors. For more information, contact Roger Bergman, rbjps@creighton.edu.
Authentic Assignments
Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe propose in Understanding by Design that a learning task is authentic when it has six characteristics. Authentic assignments and activities must be carefully designed but what makes them worthwhile is the kinds of learning experiences they promote. For more information about how to design and develop authentic assignments, see the December issue of The Teaching Professor (PDF).
